Africa and the Middle East share the Nobel Prize

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee and Tawakul Karman shared the Nobel Peace Prize for 2011. It takes strong determination and courage to stand for women empowerment in that part of the world, and the Nobel Prize Committee has rightly honoured the three distinguished women. While extreme poverty and high adolescent rate remain a challenge for the West African country of Liberia, gender disparity and high population growth rate plague Yemen. Nobel honour would certainly encourage further efforts to facilitate education, social justice, economic empowerment, right to vote, and ensure participation of women in the electoral process.
